Synopsis

Alice is upset because Ralph spends more time with Ed than he does with her. Ed's wife Trixie declares that their husbands are so neglectful because she and Alice have allowed their marriages to become ploddingly predictable. To remedy this situation, the girls decide to return the excitement to their marital relationships. Alas, Ralph is not at all impressed by Alice's fancy new clothes, romantic candlelit dinners, and effusions of affection, reacting in his usual insensitive manner. Finally, an angry Alice lays down the law: Either Ralph spends four nights per week taking her out, or else. Since Trixie has made the same demand on Ed, the boys have nowhere to turn. In desperation, Ralph and Ed cook up a scheme whereby they will maintain such exhausting social schedules, and keep their wives out so late, that the girls will be begging to be left home. Unfortunately, the girls are exhilarated by the new, hectic pace, and it is Ralph and Ed who are worn to a frazzle. "Boys and Girls Together" originally aired as a 37-minute sketch on the May 23, 1955, edition of The Jackie Gleason Show, as the final off-length Honeymooners entry before the property settled into a regular weekly, 30-minute slot during the 1955-56 TV season. This particular sketch was redone on October 26, 1968, in color and with songs, as an episode of Gleason's Miami-based variety series (the later version ran a bit too long, forcing Gleason to literally edit the material while he was performing it!).
