Synopsis
This 32-minute Honeymooners sketch is essentially a "plug" for the CBS game show Beat the Clock, which aired just before The Jackie Gleason Show on Saturday nights. After appearing as contestants on Beat the Clock, Ralph and Alice are invited to return the following week to compete for first prize -- a 21-inch color TV. Inasmuch as the game show obliges its contestants to perform wild stunts requiring near-perfect coordination, Ralph spends the next week rehearsing for his return appearance, running Alice ragged in his efforts to stack cups, inflate balloons, and catch lemons within a limited amount of time. Alas, on the eve of the broadcast, Alice decides to spend quality time with her sister Helen and Helen's new set of twins. As a result, Ralph's Beat the Clock partner is his old pal Ed Norton -- and viewers can well imagine what happens next. Bud Collyer and Roxanne, respectively the host and "Girl Friday" on the real Beat the Clock, appear as themselves. Listen for Audrey Meadows' frustrated ad lib when she tries to deliver a particularly convoluted line of dialogue. The first Honeymooners sketch written by the team of Leonard Stern and Sydney Zelinka -- and the first to rely almost exclusively on physical rather than verbal humor -- "Teamwork Beat the Clock" originally aired on the November 20, 1954, edition of The Jackie Gleason Show.
