Synopsis
Contemptuous of his pal Ed Norton's willingness to cater to his wife Trixie's every whim, Ralph tells Ed that "Every man should be the king of his castle." Acting upon Ralph's advice, Ed quarrels with Trixie, and as a result, Alice gets "steamed" at Ralph. The two girls walk out on their husbands, leaving the boys to do their own cooking and cleaning. Too proud to admit that he's been wrong, Ralph pretends that he and Norton are having "a ball" as temporary bachelors, and to prove it he stages a wild party -- supplying all the sound effects himself. Caught in the act by Alice, Ralph tries to win the argument by falling back on several old strategies -- the "sympathy" bit, threatening to cut Alice off without a cent, and the ever-reliable "I'm leaving forever." Alas, Alice knows Ralph's routine so well that she can even gauge the amount of time which will elapse between each threat! Originally telecast as a 36-minute sketch on the November 13, 1954, edition of The Jackie Gleason Show, "Battle of the Sexes" was repeated on January 7, 1967, in color and with songs, as an episode of Gleason's Miami-based variety series (this later, 48-minute version was included in the syndicated Honeymooners' Trip to Europe package, under the title "King of the Castle").
