Synopsis
The Kramden apartment looks even more run-down than usual in this 34-minute Honeymooners sketch; making things worse, all the plumbing is on the blink. On the advice of neighborhood lawyer Shaughnessy, Ralph refuses to pay his rent until the landlord makes the necessary repairs. Taking things a few steps farther (as he always does), Ralph spends the rent money to fix up the apartment, replete with garish wallpaper -- secure in the belief that a clause in his lease will force the landlord to pay for the repairs himself. But as usual, Ralph has failed to peruse the "fine print" in the lease. And wait until you see who plays the landlord! (Hint: He definitely lives up to his reputation as the biggest cheapskate and tightwad in history!) "Principle of the Thing" originally aired April 30, 1955, as a component of The Jackie Gleason Show.
