Synopsis
The leader of the Kei pirates has poisoned Gene. He offers to deliver an antidote if the crew abandons the Outlaw Star. In obvious pain, Gene refuses to budge. Melfina helps, taking Gene into the chamber she occupies during operation of the ship. As the enemy closes in, Jim stands tough, organizing the ship's defense. Gene has a flashback to his childhood, then a virtual "growing closer" with Melfina as she heals him. The Tao pirates try to spoil the party by deploying mechanical soldiers to blast the ship. Fred Luo warns Jim about these particular pirates while Gene returns from below decks, perhaps prematurely. It's battle stations for the Outlaw Star, even for Suzuka -- who has a thing for Kei pirates. The spaceport authority orders Gene to power the Outlaw Star down, but he ignores them. Gilliam is convinced he's in league with lunatics, but he obeys his orders. The Outlaw Star rockets into space with a newly confident Gene Starwind at the controls. Whatever congratulatory moments might be savored are cut short by the appearance of some very hot-looking grappler pirate ships. Gene switches to grappler combat mode and prepares to engage them. What follows is a battle sequence between the Outlaw Star and the attackers that's simply wonderful to behold. Afterward, Gene's newfound confidence is unshaken, but he needs a little freshening up. As for the Outlaw Star, it's off to Heifong, a system that's friendly to Ban pirates, but not to Kei pirates. Suzuka, as always, urges caution.
