Synopsis
Gene and Gilliam run through the Outlaw Star's startup procedures with disastrous results. The former "Space Cherry" proves his qualifications to pilot the ship -- to no one but himself. He rebels against Gilliam's not-so-gentle barbs. Both Gene and Jim take outside jobs to help defray the cost of outfitting the ship. Melfina experiments with the more mundane aspects of shipboard life, mostly preparing menus and cooking. Jim finds his classic car in the impound yard and brings it home. A mysterious band of pirates begins to stealthily stalk every member of the crew. Melfina can't sleep, so Gene gets a few ideas about how to help her to relax. Repair work continues to the accompaniment of a happy tune. Even Gilliam helps out in whatever way he can, which isn't always very much or very good. Intruders force their way into the ship. Kei pirates -- huge ones -- attempt to void Suzuka's contract. Gene takes on the evil-looking pirate mastermind and his look-alike, move-alike minions. Suzuka goes up against an economy-sized Senjutsu master, who just manages to get her warmed up; secret techniques win the day for her. Gene takes on the Tao pirate leader. Finally, back safely aboard the ship, Suzuka announces she's become too interested in the trio to kill Gene this early. She offers to lend them a hand in fighting the Kei pirates. A grave injury to Gene puts the whole operation in jeopardy.
