Episode Guide
Rescue in Panama
Series: Combat Zone
Synopsis
As screened on the Military Channel, the documentary series Combat Zone pulls viewers "inside" of noted armed conflicts, military missions and wartime turning points from the late 20th and 21st century. Each episode hones in on one such event, with everything shot through the soldiers' eyes. In each case, dramatic reenactments (featuring professional actors) are used to transport audiences back to the place and time in question. The episode entitled "Rescue in Panama" plunges into the U.S.-led rescue effort mounted in December 1989, when the American government (led by then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin L. Powell) put together a crack team of commandos known as the Delta Force to invade the hellish penitentiary known as Carcel Modelo and free CIA informant Kurt Muse from the confines of that facility. The mission occurred despite General Manuel Noriega's cautions that Muse would be exterminated if any rescue were attempted; the effort, of course, not only came off without a hitch, but immediately led to Noriega's overthrow.
