The River Thames: The Monarch's Waterway
Series: Crown and Country
Synopsis
Prince Edward hosts a tour of "The River Thames," including the Tower of London, built by William the Conqueror more than 900 years ago. Also: Greenwich Palace, the Royal Hospital at Chelsea, Tower Bridge and the ancient monument "Cleopatra's Needle.", The Crown and Country series is written, produced, and hosted by Edward Windsor, Earl of Wessex, youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II. He traces the history of this famous river from the time of William the Conqueror, and discusses its importance to the development of London. The river was the safest means of travel for the royal family, and King Henry VIII made it a point to locate nine of his thirteen palaces nearby. Edward visits the Tower of London, and points out the Yeoman Gaolers, known to most as Beefeaters, who protect the Crown Jewels, housed in the Tower.
