Synopsis
Having observed a family dinner deteriorate into an argument over religion, Charles understands why Sebastian prefers to keep his friend apart from his family. Following a spur of the moment decision by Sebastian, the two friends travel to Venice to visit Sebastian's father (Laurence Olivier) who lives there with his mistress Cara. She warns Charles that the Marchmains are a family full of self-hatred and that Sebastian is unhealthily pre-occupied with his own childhood. Cara also warns him that Sebastian is in danger of becoming a drunkard.
