Synopsis
When an old neighbour tells Banks that she has discovered a gun in her teenage daughter's bedroom, his first instinct is to retrieve it without fuss. Helen persuades him that she should go by the book and enter with a firearms squad, but neither of them can foresee that this will lead to an innocent man being critically injured. An internal investigation threatens to break up the team, as Annie is ordered to scrutinise Helen's role in the operation. In consequence, professional divisions are made worse by the fledgling romantic relationship between Annie and Banks. Meanwhile, news that the gun has recently been fired leaves the DCI searching for the owner and its potential victim. On the trail of a notorious villain, Banks discovers a connection which brings the case worryingly close to home.
