Synopsis
When a professional hitman bursts into the luxury home of Keith Rothwell and shoots him dead in cold blood, Banks is struck by the strange reactions of the victim's family. But before long evidence comes to light that Rothwell has been living a secret double life. There is also a link to a major money-laundering scam which drags Banks into a fraud investigation with political ramifications - and into conflict with an old rival. With DI Helen Morton struggling to fit into her new surroundings and Banks uncertain of his place in a changing police environment, both are struck by the shifting nature of identity in the case. Just who was Keith Rothwell and who wanted him dead?, With Pamela Jeffries in a coma after being viciously beaten, Banks is even more determined to find Rothwell's killer. Convinced that he has a vital clue, Banks sets out to learn more about Keith Rothwell. Against orders he decides to question MP Martin Fleming - which puts him on a collision course with DCI Burgess. Tom Rothwell's return from abroad presents Helen with an opportunity to put pressure on the family. But when Ken's pornography search turns up a name for the suspected hitman, Helen and the team are soon on a manhunt across the Yorkshire countryside. As Banks gets closer to understanding Keith Rothwell's double life, he starts to question his own state of mind. Then as the various strands of the case begin to make sense, Banks and Helen have to connect before they can finally identify a murderer.
