Caroline is an army wife, recently moved to barracks with a new baby. Her husband Tom is on his first tour away, and Caroline is finding it hard to adjust to life alone. She receives help from old hand Maggie, who puts Caroline in touch with rat catcher Sam when she finds herself with a vermin problem. Caroline and Sam quickly become close friends, with Sam unwittingly taking Tom's place within the household. Their friendship arouses suspicion among the other wives, however, and Sam soon pays a terrible price. Sam and Caroline end up confessing their love for one another, but they are interrupted by a tragic phone call...
