Episode Guide
La battaglia di Legnano
Series: Verdi
Synopsis
The story goes that Ludwig van Beethoven finished the solo part of his Violin Concerto so late that the solo violist, Franz Clement, had to sight-read his part on the work's premiere on December 23, 1806. Clement apparently was not amused, and expressed his annoyance by adding, between the concerto's first and second parts, a melody of his own accord, played on one string with his violin held upside down. We will probably never know whether this actually happened, but we do know that on its premiere the Violin Concerto received a lukewarm reception at best, and was only occasionally performed in subsequent years. It was revived after the composer's death, when the then twelve year old violinist Joseph Joachim began playing it again. Yet some had immediately recognized its appeal: Beethoven's contemporary, the legendary pianist Muzio Clementi greatly admired the Violin Concerto and requested Beethoven to revise it for piano and orchestra.
