Synopsis
Giuseppe Verdi's 1843 opera 'I Lombardi alla prima crociata' (The Lombards on the First Crusade) deals with the tragic history of two brothers. Eighteen years ago, Lord Folco's sons Pagano and Arvino both courted Viclinda. Viclinda chose Arvino. Pagano, who could not accept this, sought to kill his brother. After a failed attempt he was banished. Now, eighteen years later, he has returned. Claiming he wants to bury the hatchet, he has returned to make peace with Arvino, Viclina and their daughter Giselda. In truth, he still seeks revenge on his brother. Attacking at night, he assumes he is stabbing Arvino, but it turns out it is his old father he is killing. Again, Pagano is banished, and this time it seems Arvino will never hear from him again. However, destiny cannot be forced: years later, when Arvino goes on crusade, both brothers meet once more, with tragic consequences...
