Episode Guide
Rigoletto
Series: Verdi
Synopsis
The title of Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonata No. 29 'Hammerklavier' may give the impression of an especially loud piece that involves a lot of 'hammering' on the piano keys. Though this sonata may have its fierce moments, it is in fact just the German word for piano that was meant. Put simply: the composer wanted to make clear that the sonata was to be played on a modern instrument and that instruments which required plucking of strings (such as the harpsichord), instead of pressing keys that make hammers touch the strings, were not an option. Beethoven wrote the piece in 1818 and dedicated it to his patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria. It was a revolutionary sonata: not only because of its length (an average performance takes about 45 minutes), but its difficulty also makes it legendary unto this day.
