Synopsis
This episode of Ken Burns' highly praised series details how Sherman's troops burned Atlanta and then marched toward the Carolinas. It also traces the footsteps of Grant's forces as they waged war against Robert E. Lee's men at Petersburg. Jefferson Davis' ongoing efforts are also noted as the Civil War begins to wind down to its conclusion. Lee finally surrenders to General Grant at the Appomattox Court House when Lee discovers that his troops are greatly outnumbered. The program outlines the terms given for reunification of the country and how nearly everyone began trying immediately to put the destructive war behind them and move on with their lives.
