Synopsis
General Robert E. Lee decided to lead his 73,000 men north following a number of successful spring battles. When they reached Gettysburg, PA, they were surprised to meet up with 90,000 soldiers ready to challenge them. The loss of human life was staggering, causing Lee to never again try to advance north. As this episode of Ken Burns' Civil War progresses, viewers are reminded that Grant's forces successfully seized Vicksburg while troops elsewhere continued their separate battles. President Lincoln's journey to Gettysburg is noted, along with the short but famous speech he delivered there regarding America's future.
