Synopsis
Architectural journalist and critic Kieran Long and award-winning architect Piers Taylor are following self-builders as they take on the biggest gamble of their lives. All have less than £100k to spend, little or no experience and life savings on the line. In this episode, couple Jane and Andy look to trade the conveniences of the modern home for a self-sufficient lifestyle after buying a plot on an eco-community in West Wales. These passionate environmentalists intend to build a house with locally sourced materials. Their new home must also help them meet the community's self-sufficiency quotas, allowing them to produce 75% of everything they consume from food to electricity. Kieran helps the couple by visiting award-winning eco-conscious homes to highlight the positives and pitfalls of sustainable building, whilst Piers helps former chemical engineer Andy get the plans out of his head and onto paper, as welll as providing some intriguing suggestions to help with sufficiency.
