Synopsis
Tony Robinson and the Team return for a new run of Britain's most successful archaeological series with seven brand new Time Team programmes. The Team visit Norman Cross in Cambridgeshire, a site that is over 200 years old and housed the world's first ever purpose-built prisoner of war camp. It has never before been excavated and the team are keen to unearth the final resting place of almost 2,000 prisoners who died at the camp, but what they discover takes them all by surprise. The camp at Norman Cross was a huge complex. Built by the British in 1797, it was used to incarcerate 7,000 Napoleonic soldiers and sailors. Approximately 2,000 of these prisoners died of disease at the camp but the location of their graves has never been found. There are surprisingly few historical documents that discuss the location of the cemetery and many of those that do were written over 100 years after the event. With a lack of concrete historical documentation to point the Team in the right direction, they must rely solely on their archaeological skills to locate this lost cemetery. As the dig progresses the team uncover evidence of what life was really like in an early 19th-century prisoner of war camp. When it was built, the camp's design was hailed as a groundbreaking achievement, a lesson in taking large numbers of troops out of action while keeping them in as humane conditions as possible: a far cry from the disease-ridden prisons that preceded it. But as the excavations begin the Team find evidence of a camp blighted by death, brutality and prisoners on 'the make'.
