Synopsis
A park just behind Portsmouth's Tudor naval defences is the site of one of the city's oldest buildings: a hospital built by monks in 1212. As well as providing for the sick, it was also an inn for people setting off on pilgrimage. a small part of it still stands, converted to a beautiful church, but no one knows where the rest of it was or what it looked like. Armed with geophys equipment and some of the oldest maps in Britain, the team set about unearthing Portsmouth's medieval past. But the dig soon hits the buffers as the archaeology in the trenches doesn't match the apparent abundance of evidence of where the hospital should be. Buffeted by fierce winds and biting cold, the diggers and surveyors clash over what they've uncovered in the ground. Over the three days the archaeology consistently confounds the team, who have to use all the resources at their disposal to make sense of a frustrating site. But thanks to persistence, some decent fleeces, a bit of sweat and, surprisingly, a Tudor illustration of the sinking of the Mary Rose, an eleventh-hour discovery finally cracks the secrets of Governor's Green.
