Synopsis
Not many people realise that Transition Year, or TY, was introduced in 1974. Mount St. Michael Boarding School in Roscommon was a frontrunner and in this last episode we features some of the students and teachers who were involved in the first TY 'experiment' and the fond memories they have of the programme. We compare that to what TY is today: a year in which young adults can learn about themselves and what's beyond the school walls. Episode 4 also deals with exams, how they used to be conducted and how the Leaving Cert today seems to put huge amounts of pressure on students, teachers and parents. The series concludes the way it started: wrapping up we gauge, often with the power of hindsight, the overall school experience of our contributors. What did they get out of it, which teachers inspired them and how well did they prepare them for the minefield that is called... adulthood.
