Episode Guide
Series: Back to School
Synopsis
Boarding schools have always had an air of exclusivity around them. In the mid 20th century, only children from affluent parents got to study beyond primary school. For most pupils, if not all, it would have been the first time away from home. That all changed when Minister for Education Donogh O'Malley introduced free post primary education in 1967. It started the demise of boarding schools to a point that, today, there are only a handful of them left. In this episode we also get a revealing look of how exclusive boarding schools, like Clongowes, Alexandra College and Belvedere, aim to give their students the best of the best and hope it rubs off on them - and, in the process, dismantle some of the prejudices that exist against them.
