Synopsis
Via a meticulously-selected combination of outer space footage, state-of-the-art CG graphics and informed scientific discussion, the History Channel documentary series The Universe investigates various aspects of the cosmos, with each episode devoted to one particular subtopic. As the most foreboding of all the episodes, "The End of the Earth - Deep Space Threats to Our Planet" rests on the assertion that such celestial phenomena as comets, asteroids, black holes and gamma ray bursts can make living on the Earth a dangerous and highly risky proposition. The program then speculates on a plethora of scenarios that could arise and bring a sad and permanent end to life on Earth, and discusses the ways in which 21st century scientists are struggling to develop ways to prevent such catastrophes from occurring.
