Synopsis
Hyacinth (Patricia Routledge) seeks to impress the elderly Mrs. Fortescue (Jean Anderson) whose sister married a baronet, when she asks her for a ride into town. Hyacinth wants everything to go smoothly, so she rehearses Richard (Clive Swift) on the social graces, including how to ring a doorbell properly ("Keep the index finger straight"). Soon the determined Mrs. Fortescue is directing Richard's driving, insisting that they pick up Hyacinth's socially inferior sisters, Daisy (Judy Cornwell) and Rose (Mary Millar). Mrs. Fortescue finds Rose's complaints about her love life fascinating, and demands (much to Hyacinth's annoyance) that they stop at a local pub to discuss them further. Hyacinth considers herself too dignified to enter "public houses," but her attempt to get a closer look at the goings-on inside jeopardizes her social standing.
