The Long Night

The drama continues. Morgan invites the people of Arthur's court to Castle Pendragon for a feast with a view of showing loyalty to her half brother. Several members of the Camelot party are reluctant to go to Pendragon but Arthur insists that they should go. On arrival, the party eat and drink heartily, and Arthur and Morgan swear oaths of loyalty to each other. The peace is disrupted when an attack is made on the castle and the courtyard is set alight. Arthur and Merlin put out the fires, but the castle remains under siege. The men make an educated guess that Aldwulf, an old enemy of Uther's, is the attacker. Later, Kay sends out a scout, Morgan's devoted servant Harwel who has pledged to carry out any of her orders, as the others prepare to defend the castle. Harwel returns injured, and reports that they don't stand a chance against Aldwulf's forces. Morgan instructs her troops to ride out and attack, however Gawain objects, arguing that the action will leave them defenceless. Morgan apologises and suggests that Arthur should return to Camelot for his safety but Arthur declines and refuses to go back on his oath.
