Synopsis
In 1922, an expedition led by Roy Chapman Andrews, protégé to the head of the Museum of Natural History in New York, set out in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia to find the fossil remains of dinosaurs. The tumultuous story of Roy Andrews is depicted in this documentary, with a beginning filled with adventure and excitement and an ending filled with heartache and failure. The first Andrews expedition to the Gobi Desert flourished with success, as he came back to New York with a variety of dinosaur fossils. Excited at the prospect of finding more, his next expedition to Mongolia was plagued with difficulties from the start, everything from loss of funding to legal troubles with the native Mongolian people. Because one of the members of his initial, successful expedition was a filmmaker, this documentary is a rare look not only at Andrews, but at the expedition itself and at Mongolia in the 1920s.
