Episode Guide
Catherine of Aragon
Series: Six Wives of Henry VIII
Synopsis
'Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived'. The women who married Henry VIII have become defined not by the way they lived but by the way their lives ended. They are seen as victims of a bloated tyrant, deserving pity, but not respect. Dr David Starkey, the controversial Tudor historian, reveals them as vibrant, powerful individuals who showed great dignity when faced with exile from the King's favour, or even the executioner's axe in the Tower of London. The series focuses on the stories of the women themselves, rather than on Henry VIII, revealing in intimate detail their experiences of sex, childbirth and the glamorous, dangerous life at court, including the deadly intrigues that dethroned them. Key moments are recreated and dramatised to depict them as real characters. The series begins with the story of Catherine of Aragon, a remarkable woman whose refusal to accept a divorce in defiance of Henry VIII's wishes changed the course of English history. Catherine of Aragon was brought to England in 1501 as a teenager for the royal wedding of the century. She was to marry the Tudor heir, the prince Arthur. But after just six months Arthur died suddenly. Then in 1509 she married the new King Henry VIII. She was the perfect royal wife; beautiful, intelligent, and capable of ruling in Henry's absence. But she could not give Henry the son that he craved.
