Synopsis
The request to leave war-bonds campaign is finally granted to Basilone and is assigned to California's Camp Pendleton in December 1943. He goes there to train new recruits. At the base, he falls in love with Lena Riggi, a fellow sergeant. Both grow closer despite being aware of the high chances of him returning to combat. He does return to combat in February 1945 for the invasion of Iwo Jima.
