Synopsis
This video is part two of a five-part PBS series on addiction. Hosted by Bill Moyers, the series looks at issues from causes to treatments of drug and alcohol addiction. In this volume, the subject is the pathology of the brain, and the effects of drugs and alcohol on this organ. Research has shown that addictions make neural pathways in the brain, that when in place, are extremely difficult to overcome. The program follows brain researchers, as they track a cocaine user's brain, and its images of pleasure, as the substance takes effect. The program leaves little doubt that addiction is a disease. The episode also looks at the role of genetics in addiction.
