Synopsis
Conclusion. The century's second half began and ended with good emperors (Claudius and Trajan). In between was a mixed bag. First came the tyrant Nero, who didn't fiddle while Rome burned (A.D. 64) but didn't do anything to stop it, either. His successor, Vespasian, brought stability, which lasted as long as he did (he died in 79, the year Vesuvius erupted). Also profiled: the writers Seneca and Pliny the Younger, good men who served bad emperors (Nero and Domitian, respectively); and the Apostle Paul, whose influence on Rome would come later. Sigourney Weaver narrates.
