Danny Meets Andy Griffith
Series: The Danny Thomas Show
Synopsis
To test audience response for their upcoming TV series The Andy Griffith Show, executive producers Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas presented a pilot episode on Thomas' own weekly sitcom. Offered as the February 15, 1960 installment of The Danny Thomas Show, "Danny Meets Andy Griffith" found entertainer Danny Williams (Thomas) and his family stuck in the town of Mayberry, North Carolina when Danny ran through a nearly-invisible stop sign. The town's affable sheriff, Andy Taylor (Griffith)-who was also Mayberry's mayor, justice of the peace, newspaper editor and what-have-you - decided to levy an unusually huge fine, on the theory that Danny could easily afford it (which, of course, he could). Outraged, Danny refused to pay the fine, electing instead to remain in Sheriff Taylor's jail-which was run more like a comfy hotel room, complete with room service and curtains on the windows. In the course of the episode, Danny came to appreciate Andy's down-home goodness by witnessing the sheriff's encounters with his son Opie and various and sundry local citizens. Though Ronny Howard had already been cast as Opie, the role of town drunk Otis Campbell, played in The Andy Griffith Show proper by Hal Smith, was filled by Frank Cady (later "Sam Drucker" on Petticoat Junction), while Frances Bavier, the future "Aunt Bee," played an entirely different character. Though substantially different from The Andy Griffith Show, "Danny Meets Andy Griffith"-and Andy Griffith himself, immediately clicked with viewers, making Griffith's series a fait accompli. February 15, 1960.
