Synopsis
More4 presents the first opportunity to see all five parts of Tony Robinson's series that explores the weird and wonderful history of belief, superstition and religious experience in Britain. For 2000 years, Britain has been a Christian country. Or has it? In fact, our ancestors actually kept many other dark, fantastical beliefs alive. It was a world underpinned by outlandish, dangerous and unusual beliefs. Ideas that today seem unbelievable, but were seen as uncontroversial and hugely influential; some shaped our history as much as mainstream religion. Two thousand years ago, when Britain was a Pagan country, our gods were cruel and unforgiving. Altars ran with the blood of human sacrifice. Far from inheriting the earth, the meek were more likely to be slaughtered. In this previously unseen episode, Tony Robinson's journey to meet these vicious gods and discover what they demanded of our ancestors begins 2500 years ago in Celtic Britain. He enters a world dependent on the vagaries of nature where keeping the gods on side was both tricky and vital for survival. The more you wanted from these gods, the more you had to give, from your best sword to your best friend. Drawing on Roman records and forensic analysis of a corpse, the bloody ritual of human sacrifice is revealed in shocking detail. However, it seems that one best friend would not have been enough to ward off the worst threats, like invasion. That necessitated ritual slaughter of whole families. Tony and his team reconstruct a full-scale replica of the horrific Wicker Man, which would have been filled with humans and cattle before being burnt to a cinder. The Roman gods brought to these islands may have been more political and more cultured, but they were no less demanding. Tony draws the line at the voluntary self-castration required by the goddess Cybele; before discovering how the invading VIkings brought bloodthirsty worship to a whole new level.
