Synopsis
They investigate why this single species comes in so many different shapes and sizes - and how genetics underlies the extreme differences between dog breeds. In this episode, Ruth Goodman uncovers the surprising origins of the poodle haircut and discovers what gives greyhounds their speed, as well as visiting the ancestral home of the golden retriever in the Scottish highlands. Meanwhile, Steve meets the hairiest dog breed of all and reveals how its dreadlocked coat once acted as lightweight armour. Kate investigates the remarkable story of dogs, all the way back to their ancient ancestor, the grey wolf, through to the Victorian creation of the dog breeds we know today.
