Synopsis
1954 Emancipation and Victory. The concluding programme of a three-part series examining the abolition of slavery. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected president. War breaks out but what is expected to be a quick and bloodless conflict drags on. In1863, Lincoln emancipates the slaves in rebel territory and African-Americans are able to enlist in the Union forces. In December 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment is ratified, banning slavery in all states forever, bringing to an end nearly four decades of campaigning.
