Synopsis
Spike (James Marsters) and Drusilla (Juliet Landau) think they may have finally found a way to defeat Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as they assemble the dismembered parts of "The Judge" (Brian Thompson), a demon whose touch can kill and whose powers can exceed nearly anyone's. As Spike and Drusilla attempt to reanimate the demon, Buffy finds herself drawn closer to Angel (David Boreanaz), though Buffy's uncle warns her to keep her distance from him. Buffy thinks she's defeated The Judge by stealing his arms, but when Spike's underlings snatch them back, Buffy is nearly killed, until Angel arrives to save the day. That night, Buffy and Angel make love for the first time, but they soon realize that this act has summoned the power of the dark forces. "Surprise" was the first part of a two-part story, which was concluded with "Innocence.".
