Episode Guide
Consumption
Series: Art in the Twenty-First Century
Synopsis
This PBS documentary is episode one of a four-part series which examines the visual arts in contemporary America by interviewing some of the country's foremost artists and showcasing their work. This volume examines how the consumerism that pervades American culture affects the work of the country's artists. In some sense, we are what we buy, and everything is for sale from sex to art. Five artists, including Barbara Kruger, Michael Ray Charles, Matthew Barney, Andrea Zittel, and Mel Chin share how this phenomenon affects their lives and work, and choice of subject matter -- from Freud to worm farms.
