Episode Guide
The National Pastime
Series: Ken Burns' Baseball
Synopsis
The previous five "innings" of Ken Burns' sweeping baseball documentary set the stage for the triumphant moment in this sixth episode when Jackie Robinson takes the field in his first Major League game for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1942, an event of enormous personal and social significance. Other personal achievements of the decade included Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak and Ted Williams' .406 batting average in 1941. Burns also highlights the state of baseball during World War II, rescued, in part, by the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The decade ended with the death of the legendary Babe Ruth.
