Synopsis
Documentary series. The opening programme offers a brief history of the Italian Risorgimento to provide the context for the great flight from the Mezzogiorno region, as well as the origins of the first generation's psychology. By the late 9th century, Italians begin to put down roots and 'Little Italys' spring up throughout the US, but the first generation of Italian Americans who hold on to their language and culture are branded as outsiders and mistrusted by non-Italians.
