Buckinghamshire, 2003: The Inverted Roof House

Tom Perry and his partner Judy cheerfully admit they're going through something of a mid-life crisis. But, instead of blowing all their cash on Ferraris and a flash new wardrobe, the Hertfordshire couple embark on a building project encompassing hi-tech gadgetry, glass walls, exposed steel and a wing-shaped roof. Buying a plot of land in the countryside outside Amersham costs £420,000 alone - and Tom refuses to disclose the budget he's working with. Kevin McCloud estimates it would need to be at least a million pounds. With no experience whatsoever of building work, Tom hopes to be client, contractor, site manager and labourer. Tension rises when he sells the family home without Judy's knowledge; the quantity surveyor's not happy and, after eight months, the site is still an abstract maze of concrete walls and steel. And now it's time to put that roof on.
