The past comes back to haunt and horrify a former cop and a beautiful woman psychiatrist in the pilot of the HBO-produced Spanish-language, Buenos Aires-set series Epitafios. Detective Benitez (Lito Cruz), a grizzled veteran of the force, gets a mysterious call, inviting him to an abandoned mansion, where he finds a body, gruesomely dismembered and arranged with the utmost care and precision throughout the house. All that's missing is the head. Still more disturbing, there are two freshly dug graves behind the house, complete with tombstones. One has his name on it, and an incomplete epitaph that reads "who never should have." The other headstone lists two names, Renzo Márquez (Julio Chávez of A Red Bear), a former cop who quit the force years ago, and Dr. Laura Santini (Paola Krum), a psychiatrist. Benitez immediately knows what links the two. Five years earlier, Benitez and Márquez were called in when a fired professor took four students hostage on campus, and doused them with some sort of flammable accelerant. Dr. Santini, who had been treating the man, insisted on speaking to him before the police moved in. But Benitez ordered the gung-ho Márquez to go to the skylight above the room, with an eye to surprising the kidnapper. Marquez slipped and fell through, with tragic results. Traumatized, Márquez quit the force and began seeing Dr. Santini professionally, but stopped when he realized he was falling in love with her. Now the two have been reluctantly thrown together again by a madman on a vendetta. Márquez, who cares for his elderly father, Marcos (Villanueva Cosse), is adamant about not getting involved until he gets a frantic phone call from Benitez.
