Mladý vojín, povoláním knihovník a povahou pacifista, nastupuje do pohraničních kasáren k výkonu základní vojenské služby. Na útvaru vládne šikana, důstojníky tiše tolerována. Vojín Adam (T. Sagher) vzdoruje a fyzicky napadne šéfa mazáků (M. Etzler), nemá však šanci a později skončí v nemocnici. Vojín Banýr, v civilu umělecký kovář, je mazáky dokonce zavražděn. Hlavními terči šikany se stane knihovník a také cikán Aladar. Oba společně uprchnou a zinscenují pokus o útěk přes hranice. Aladar je mazáky zastřelen a knihovník zadržen pohraničníky, celá skupina mazáků se ovšem dostane před soud.
