Ve Škodových závodech, kde se v roce 1914 horečně zbrojí, pracuje dílovedoucí Kalina, otec mladíků Pavla a Jana. Pavel je přívržencem monarchie, Jan naopak hájí myšlenku naší národní samostatnosti. Těsně před mobilizací uteče Jan do Ruska, kde se přidá ke skupině dobrovolníků-legionářů "Česká družina", bojujících proti rakousko-uherské monarchii. Pavel narukuje do rakouské armády. Bratři se znovu setkávají až v červenci 1917 v bitvě u ukrajinského Zborova, která znamenala úspěšný průlom rakousko-uherské fronty.
