Filmmaker Andrej Fidyk tells the remarkable true story of Jung Sung San, who managed the incredible feat of escaping a North Korean concentration camp and who has since dedicated his life to raising awareness about the atrocities currently being committed against the people of the reclusive, despotic nation. In order to reach South Korea, San fled through China. Yet despite having suffered unimaginable torture at the hands of his captors, San would receive his most devastating blow to date when he learned that his loved ones to the north had either been killed or shipped to concentration camps soon after he had defected. Powerless to save them yet determined to make a difference, San collaborated with other defectors and a group of talented actors to produce Yodok, a stage musical that takes its name from one of the gulags, and aims to spotlight the suffering of the North Korean people for all the world to see.
