Dana Martinová, mladá žena volnějších mravů, zemře rukou psychicky labilního mladíka Pavla Zacha. Ten se v záchvatu žárlivosti neudržel a zabil dívku úderem do hlavy. Policie najde mrtvolu díky Danině kamarádce Evě Simonové. A právě Eva se stane druhou Pavlovou obětí. Mladík totiž v obavě z vyzrazení dívku napadne a utopí ve vaně. Dvojnásobnou vraždu dostane na starost jako svůj první případ kriminalista poručík Zeman, jemuž pomáhá zkušenější kolega Suchánek. Vyšetřování však zpočátku nikam nevede. Zatímco Pavlův otec se snaží umístit duševně nemocného syna na psychiatrickou léčebnu, Pavel ze strachu spáchá další vraždu. Ani on, ani vyšetřovatelé však zatím netuší, že od jisté doby je Pavel pouhým nástrojem v rukou někoho jiného….
