Pašā Lielā Tēvijas kara sākumā Sarkanās armijas kareivis Fjodors Poligins nokļūst vācu gūstā Latvijā. Pēc bēgšanas, ievainoto Fjodoru savā lauku mājā izmitina vecais Jāzeps. Jāzepa mazmeita Ilga un Fjodors iemīl viens otru. Partizāniem izdodas ievainoto Fjodoru nogādāt aiz frontes līnijas, Ilgu pieņem partizānu ziņneša ģimene, bet nodod vāciešiem kāds no lauciniekiem. Ilgu aresta laikā nogalina. Kristīnei izdodas izglābt viņas tikko piedzimušo meitu, kuru Fjodors ierauga tikai daudzus gadus vēlāk jau kā pieaugušu sievieti, kas ļoti līdzinās savai mātei.
