The Thirty Nine Steps

It is 1914. Europe is on the brink of war. London seems peaceful enough but a dangerous conspiracy is under way....Colonel Scudder, of the British Intelligence, has unearthed a plot of assassinate the Greek Prime Minister on a visit to London and thus precipitate World War 1. Following the murder of two cabinet ministers, in whom he had confided his fears, Scudder, knowing his life is in danger, takes refuge in the apartment of Richard Hannay and engineer on leave in London, who consequently becomes and innocent victim in espionage. The next day Hannay leaves the Colonel pondering over his notebook and makes his way to St. Pancras station to book a ticket to Scotland. Meanwhile, the Prussian agents responsible for the previous killings who are under orders from the sinister Appleton locate Scudder. Although he manages to escape to St. Pancras in search of Hannay - pausing briefly to post a package - Scudder is stabbed. Dashing to his aid, Hannay, unaware that the precious notebook has fallen, unnoticed, is arrested for murder and is subsequently charged with the crime.
