Movie
The Station Agent
Synopsis
Peter Dinklage, Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale star in writer-director Thomas McCarthy's comedy-drama about a lonely man who tries to escape society but ends up making new friends. When Finbar McBride is left a real-life train depot in his friend's will, he grabs the chance to leave the model-train shop where two men worked and start a new life. Much as he loves toy trains, it's the remoteness of his bequeathed property in New Jersey that appeals, for McBride is instantly, visibly different to the majority of those around him, and it causes him no end of unwanted attention. Indeed, on his arrival in Newfoundland, NJ, a small girl asks him if he's a midget; he corrects her and says he's a dwarf. Among the few other locals are Joe, a coffee and fast-food vendor whom McBride initially finds intrusively garrulous, and Olivia a divorcee who's mourning the loss of her son, and who (accidentally) nearly runs McBride down (twice). But it's not long before the trio develop a deeper connection. Meanwhile, McBride is also faced with the amorous advances of an attractive librarian..
