Synopsis

Writer-director Clio Barnard's second feature, loosely based on an Oscar Wilde story, is a contemporary drama about teenage lads who get involved in the shadowy world of unscrupulous scrap metal dealing. When Arbour and Swifty are excluded from their West Yorkshire school, they see an opportunity to try to dig their families out of their dire financial circumstances. The boys begin by scouring the streets for discarded household appliances, for which they are given a pittance by the local scrap metal king, incongruously and inaccurately called Kitten, who hires the duo a horse so they can bring him larger items (though the animal's cost just reduces their earnings). Kitten then persuades them to enter the mortally risky business of stealing copper wiring from railway and electricity infrastructure, as well as encouraging Swifty to take up the scarcely less dangerous pursuit of illegal horse-and-cart racing, which takes place on open roads for the benefit of braying mobs of punters (and Kitten). Can the boys meet their original intentions, or are they pushing themselves into a dead end of criminality? Partly funded by Film4.
