Synopsis
World War II drama about the German captain of a fugitive cargo ship. Disillusioned with the Nazi cause, the man struggles to return a freighter trapped in Sydney Harbour to Germany. As he tries to steer the vessel to safety, an English commander is given orders to track him down. Little does the commander know that his fiancee - a German spy - is also aboard the enemy boat. (Including five News Update), John Wayne playing a Nazi? Surely not! Well, almost: in John Farrow's war-time action film, he plays Karl Ehrlich, the captain of a German merchant ship caught in Australian waters at the outbreak of the war. Determined to get home but pursued by the British Navy, he sets sail despite being short of food and fuel. Also on board is Elsa Keller, Wayne's ex-flame and possibly a Nazi spy, who was engaged to Commander Jeff Napier, who just happens to be in charge of the pursuing destroyer. As the race for home quickens, so do the heartbeats of Karl and Elsa, trapped together on the Ergenstrasse.
