The Punk Singer
Synopsis
Sini Anderson's celebratory documentary about the groundbreaking musician Kathleen Hanna. Via interviews and archive footage, Anderson's film tracks the inspiring story of Hanna's rise in fame and influence, from her early experiences of activism and the successes of her 1990s feminist punk band Bikini Kill, through to her equally sociopolitical, fin-de-siècle electronic rock band Le Tigre. Hanna was a keystone of the Riot Grrrl movement, which aimed to give women a real voice in the male-dominated music industry and wider society. But the rush wasn't to last: in 2005, seemingly at the height of her powers, Hanna abruptly retired from music-making. The Punk Singer explores the reason for her disappearance, and charts her slow road back to music-making. Contributors include musicians Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and Corin Tucker, and writers Ann Powers and Sara Marcus; plus, anecdotes about Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
